The Tottenham defender scored twice as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to review the score on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at both ends of pitch

Following a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
