The New Mayor Vows a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in First Speech
On his initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” the metropolis, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold commencement to his administration.
An Unprecedented Figure
The new figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.
“A time such as this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.
Rejecting advice to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”
Steering by Democratic Socialist Convictions
Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my convictions for fear of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.
The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.
A Costly Policy Agenda
Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:
- Universal childcare
- Fare-free public buses
- A cap on rents for about 1 million households
- A trial program of city-run grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing External Dynamics
The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.
Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.
The Fundamental Tests of Leadership
Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering basic services: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring reliable subway service.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.
As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
